Welcome intergalactic travellers!
Mrs Armer and her class of fellow astronauts welcome you to join us in a journey of
Inquiry Learning, Story Telling, Technology and Connected Learning.
This web site is the result of Public Education collaboration in the Clarence Valley between staff from
Gulmarrad Public School and Maclean High School.
Let’s begin....
From ancient Indigenous Australian astronomy, we know there are so many stories in the stars...
This is our story of a meteorite landing in the playground at Gulmarrad Public School in the Clarence Valley, NSW Australia.
Just how did over 500 people from continents all over the globe come to share in our journey?

THE METEORITE
The meteorite was discovered on a cool August morning, in the Gulmarrad Public School playground.
Smouldering ashes surrounded the molten mass, burned from inside a hole created by the meteorite’s landing.
Quick thinking teachers quickly roped off the intergalactic visitor with CAUTION tape.
There was cause for concern:
risk management included a biological hazard, burns, or even the possibility of an alien influenza epidemic.
( Student safety is of paramount importance at Gulmarrad Public School, where every student is known, valued and cared for.)
Excited students from Kindergarten to Year Six stared in awe and began to excitedly discuss all sort of theories
to represent their ideas, knowledge and new wonderings about meteorites.
This was big. Really big.
We would need to contact NASA, the CSIRO, and perhaps even the Prime Minister.
Our planet is hot enough without a meteorite burning in the playground!
Who would clear this up in time for Crunch and Sip? By golly, who has time to eat with such excitement in the playground?
As with all exciting Clarence Valley events, the media arrived later that day....

THE MEDIA
Local newspapers were quick to make contact with the school, word had travelled around the Clarence Valley
and the Clarence Valley Independent was first on the scene.
Reporters mingled with students and staff, who were excited to share their thoughts.
The result? Read on intergalactic visitors...

THE MAP
When stories this big occur in the Clarence Valley, it’s important to share them,
so we shared our story with the world using the affordances of new media.
The map above represents Connected Educators from all over the world who responded to our story in a local paper.
Participants in the project were asked to offer a comment and their location, so that students could grid their position on a global map.
Connected Learning Groups act as vital resources for 21st Century Teachers and Learners.
We know that when learning activities are Peer Supported, Interest Driven and Academically Oriented, that student engagement thrives.
When we design learning opportunities that are Production Centred, have a Shared Purpose and are
Openly Networked, crucial contexts of learning combine to ensure student success.
We hope you enjoy the stories and comments below our map.
(There are over 500, so make a cup of tea first.)
“Greetings from Carona, CA.
This picture is of a meteorite that fell in
Frankfort, IN many, many years ago.
In the pic are my Mom and brother”
- Mary Manee
Our research with Mary Manee led us to new questions,
new directions and new learning adventures
where we searched and found information online about a meteor
that fell on the Gray Farm in Rossville Indiana.
These connections and our research proved the stories
of fallen meteorites shared with us were very much true.
Peer supported learning connections were made between Connected
students and Connected teachers.
We were learning in a GLOBAL one room school house!
Over 500 comments arrived in the Connected Learning

Where to from here?
We are very excited to now have global classmates to Skype , and research to conduct as our learning adventure continues.
We are global learners, learning about culture, science, language, stories, hurricanes, avocados, continents and communities.
We are curious about Big Foot, Sugar Land, Horseheads, Hurricane Dorian, the Little League Series, and the town of Middlesboro because it was built in a crater from a meteorite. We have been given advice to read METEOR by Patricia Polacco , and wait on a copy all the way from the USA as Nicole Smith from Maple Dale Elementary in Cincinnati is sending us a copy of the book.
Our learning has been steep, deep and transformational. We know how important our learning is,
because others care about helping us to learn about our world.
Our future learning opportunities from this project are endless....as Buzz Lightyear would say, to infinity and beyond!
We can’t wait to Skype our new classmates, global citizens on the other side of the big rock we all live on called Earth.
